Part III

As time went on, Saivel and Arthur only grew closer. Contrary to what you might expect, this didn't really have a noticeable effect on the negotiations. If it did, then the increasingly displeased public certainly did the opposite. Negotiations were tense and decisions difficult. Both Valion and the king felt they were losing ground—and neither of them was gaining any. In fact, the only one who seemed to be gaining anything were the king's subjects, and even that was arguable.

Despite this, Saivel and Arthur remained close, meeting as frequently as they could. Saivel tried as best as she could to avoid the topic of the 'awkward' situation she had with that forest spirit, but both of them knew it was still a problem.

The next time Saivel met up with Arthur was after the last meeting they'd had. This time, she notified him beforehand with a simple note warped on top of his face in the middle of the night. …Well, at the very least she'd notified him.

The note was short. Startled, Arthur sat up in bed and provided a dim light to read it by. 'Dropping by tomorrow! Castle gates if that's okay, around sunrise. I'm gonna be moving soon. -S' He sighed and flopped back onto the bed. Ugh. She had to just drop a note on top of his face in the middle of the night. At the same time, he smiled a little. It was very… very Saivel.

Smiling, he let out a yawn and slipped back into sleep.

*~*~*~*

Arthur woke early in the morning, when the sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon. He rubbed his eyes, swinging his feet onto the floor. Standing up, he walked over to the window and jerked open the curtains. A warm, golden glow greeted him. Arthur smiled and turned, walking over to his wardrobe to pick out some clothes for the day.

He looked back out the window. Hmm… it looked like it might be cold today. Sighing, Arthur rummaged through his clothes and noticed a fairly thin, light grey cloak. Taking it and laying it on his bed, Arthur continued his hunt for clothing, finally picking out a short black tunic and… all his pants were sort of beige. Pants were just something he didn't understand being fashionable and… colorful and all that. Skirts made sense, but pants? They were just… just pants.

Why was he thinking about pants that much?

Shaking his head, Arthur got dressed quickly and looked through the window, smiling at the pleasant sight of the sunrise. He then cleaned himself up and ran out of his house, conveniently located on the street nearest to the castle. It wasn't anything big, but it was two stories high (though he only really used the first, only cleaning the second). Like the rest of the homes in the area, it did look nice and was noticeably… well, it looked like a very wealthy person lived there. He had it painted simple white, though this still didn't help much. Who thought a design like that was practical at all?

He'd better stop thinking about everything too much. Running his fingers through his hair, Arthur began walking to the castle gates. He spotted someone in the distance; a blurry mix of white, black, and red. Standing there, the person progressively came closer and closer, until finally Saivel landed on the cobblestone in front of him, skidding a little on the smooth stone.

"Hi," she said, sounding breathless. She grinned, Arthur staring at her befuddled. A large… a really large bag was floating by her side, glimmering with purple waves. He looked from her to the bag, her to the bag. In response, Saivel laughed and leaned over, placing one of her hands on her leg while the other moved the floating bag towards her.

She was wearing a simple dress with a white skirt and a dark red torso, and her hair was tied up messily into a tight bun. Saivel straightened up and looked at Arthur.

"So, I uh… I'm moving, I guess."

"…yeah. Something I was wondering about… uh, where?"

"Well, I mean..." Saivel tilted her head. "…with you?"

"Are you kidding me? You couldn't at least tell me this?!" Arthur ran his fingers through his hair and sighed. "Come on, Saivel…"

"Look I was having enough trouble even beginning to make a warp to you with all the Orderstone and I wasn't gonna risk sending anything much bigger than what I did send because it might set you on fire." As Arthur panicked, Saivel covered her face with her hands. "I should… that was… look, there was no risk with something that small."

"Why couldn't you send two?"

"Because then that one might set on fire," Saivel replied smartly. She was now crossing her arms across her chest. "Look, I was tired, okay? I, uh, it slipped my mind."

"For the love of the lords, Saivel…" Arthur wasn't sure how he was supposed to react. "I mean… can I refuse?"

"Nope!" Saivel exclaimed. "If you don't let me stay, then I won't have a house unless I go to my dad's."

"I thought you liked your dad. What's the problem with that?" Immediately Saivel's face fell. "…never mind."

"Well, are you gonna let me stay? Yes or no?" Saivel gave him a piercing look which kind of… he…

"Lords… fine." Arthur sighed as Saivel half hugged, half attacked him. "LET GO OF ME I SWEAR."

"Pfft. Let's head off!"

"…My house is literally… thirty feet away."

"Oh. It really is close to the castle, huh? Hmm…"

"What's wrong?" Saivel paused and looked around. "Oh… wait. I'm… sorry. I, uh… I've got a second floor, if that helps."

"It should. Thanks." She smiled, though weakly.

"I, uh, sorry." Why was he apologizing? Saivel had just suddenly announced this, it was hardly his fault. Arthur sighed. "Well, let's get your stuff there, I guess."

"Okay." Her bag floated behind her as Saivel followed Arthur, virtually skipping with happiness.

*~*~*~*

Like it is wont to do, time went on, and they went on. People went on. Negotiations went on. And as negotiations between such opposed forces are wont to do… they worsened. Quickly. The calm king of Xyla was often struggling to keep from yelling, the Lord of Chaos' clenched fists created red bruises across his palm. Uncomfortable and feeling they would not help, Saivel and Arthur withdrew from the meetings.

That did not help either.

The people were becoming angry, asking, protesting, practically interrogating the authorities they could reach. And answers were hard. Nigh impossible.

The atmosphere was restless, unhappy. He shouldn't have taken it as a surprise when he saw them crowding the streets in front of his house—their house.

Frowning, Arthur closed the curtains gently. All of them. Naturally, Saivel took notice.

"What is it?" she asked softly. Arthur sighed.

"Nothing," he answered brusquely. Saivel raised an eyebrow and said nothing more.

At least… not until she heard them yelling.

"What do they want?" she asked, softer.

"I don't know," Arthur replied. "Go upstairs."

She didn't ask anything about that, just pressed her lips into a tight, thin line and went. Taking a deep breath, Arthur opened the door and the first thing he heard was the only thing he really needed to hear.

"The king is dead."

Part IV

His reaction was immediate. "What?!"

"Finally!" someone exclaimed. "What took you so long?" "Is his daughter in there?" "The king is dead."

"The king… is dead?" Arthur gulped and stepped back a little. People began yelling, shouting. "Shut up! One of you, tell me what happened. You." He pointed at a nearby young man, who gulped and walked up.

"I… I don't know exactly what happened—" the man started nervously.

"I don't care!" Arthur yelled. "Tell me what you know!"

"…the king is dead."

"I already know that!" Arthur was fuming, enraged.

"…as is the rest of the royal family."

Arthur was silent, disbelieving. Confused. "What?" he asked, gasped hoarsely. "How?"

"HE did it!" someone yelled out.

"I said that he—" Arthur pointed towards the young man— "was going to tell me what happened."

The man swallowed nervously again. "Um, well… he…" The man almost spat the word out. "He…"

"I'm assuming by 'he' you're talking about Valion?"

"The Lord of Chaos, yes." The man nodded quickly.

"Where is he?" Arthur demanded, stepping threateningly closer.

"I… we… don't know, he scared off the maid who heard yells, he's probably long gone by now—"

"Thank you," said Arthur, his voice tight. "Leave… All of you," he yelled, his voice increasing in volume. They stood there for a moment, uncertain, hesitant. He yelled even louder one more time: "Leave!"

When they hesitated longer, he shot them a glare and practically shoved the young man out of his house, slamming the door in their faces before they could say a word. Of course, someone else could still speak.

"Arthur," he heard. He clenched his fists at the sound of her voice. "Arthur, listen to me—" she ran up to him, grabbed his arm tightly.

He opened his mouth, swallowed, closed it. He didn’t want to yell, didn't want to scream at her. Her eyes were pleading with him to just listen to her for one moment before he did something stupid, and he decided that he would.

"They were saying my father… that he…" Instead of finishing her sentence, Saivel tilted her head. Arthur nodded almost imperceptibly. "He wouldn't," she stated as if it were an absolute fact and something that Arthur could really, truly believe. He stared at her, his expression unchanging.

"Do you think that he would kill the king?" she asked. Arthur paused and slowly shook his head no. "What would he have to gain? He would only lose—not only the short-lived 'peace' he'd gained but likely his own life."

"Definitely his own life," Arthur spat before he could stop himself. Saivel's grip around his arm tightened. He tugged away, trying to escape her. "Let go of me."

"No. Not if you're going to do something this… this idiotic. Do you really—"

"Yes! Yes, I do!" Arthur cut her off suddenly. Her grip loosened and he wrenched his arm away. "Stay here," he ordered. "I don't want…"

"Really?" she asked, and he swallowed hard. "But fine. If you say so. If you are really, truly…" her voice wavered, she paused and blinked tears away. "If you are really… going to do this… to me, and to yourself…" Her voice was choked. "Then…"

Arthur had hardly expected her to punch him, especially that hard. He stumbled backwards and struggled to catch his breath, surprised at Saivel's outburst. She slammed into him before he had recovered, grabbing onto his shoulders and shoving him into the wall.

"What…" Arthur managed to get out before she punched him again, making him double over and cough.

"What were you going to ask? 'What was that for?' You know perfectly well, I'm sure of that." Saivel's voice was full of spite. She backed up, away from him, and turned around. She crossed her arms across her chest and waited for a response.

After a minute, there was none. Saivel spun back around and saw that Arthur was gone. How he'd managed to go so silently was beyond her understanding.

How he'd managed to just go was beyond her understanding, she realized as she stopped fighting back the tears.

*~*~*~*

Arthur was surprised at himself for having such stealth. Maybe he'd learned from Saivel sneaking up and scaring him all the time. His breath caught in his throat as he realized exactly what he'd done, but he shoved the thought away and ran down the streets, grasping his sheathed sword tightly in his hand.

A few of the crowd still lingered. They looked at him questioningly as he shoved abruptly past them. 'Hey, wait…' 'What are you?...' A million questions and he didn't care, he was set on one thing and one thing only.

The general of the Xylan army—though he supposed that by now, given the death of the royal family, he was much more than that—stood in front of the gates for but a second to catch his breath and scan the skies. He didn't see the Lord of Chaos anywhere, but that didn't mean much.

Of course, he was let in—the gates were wide open anyway. He knew where his armor was… wait.

Unsheathing the sword, Arthur dashed up the stairs as quickly as he could until he reached the throne room. Ignoring the room's beauty—he'd admired it plenty of times before—he instead went immediately for the massive piece of Orderstone in the center.

It was immensely powerful, this particular piece of Orderstone. The heart of the stuff, he knew, was underground, but anyway this Orderstone was possibly… better than that. It had been the centerpiece of the throne room for as long as Xyla had been. He felt guilt for what he was about to do.

"Forgive me," he whispered as he thrust the sword downwards upon the case surrounding it, scattering shards of glass everywhere. Luckily, he managed to avoid being majorly harmed, but a few shards scratched at his legs. He sword and decided it was unimportant. Holding out his empty hand, he gently brought it close to the Orderstone. Arthur supposed he shouldn't have been surprised when it reacted to his touch, but he couldn't help the chills going down his spine.

It was powerful. Incredibly powerful. It could destroy the Lord of Chaos. And yet… he could control it. Him.

As the liquid stone formed an armor around him, he realized it was like he was accepting a duty. He was going to kill the Lord of Chaos. And then, of course, he would be succeeded…

…by Saivel.

The armor completed and his heart stopped for a moment before he reached his sword out and allowed it, as well, to be coated with Orderstone, distracting him from his thoughts. The blade was a pure white, and it glowed a faint blue. Experimentally, Arthur decided to try to cast a spell through the sword.

A massive blast of blue energy emanated from the sword. Surprised, Arthur blinked and stumbled backwards, then realized he might destroy something. Just like that, the energy veered away from the wall before dissipating.

No more time to test what the Orderstone could do. Casting one last glance at the empty pedestal where he could see the liquid stone bubbling up below, he flew up the stairs. Huh. He could fly. It was actually… quite nice, really. He'd never thought flying would be that nice, now he almost envied Saivel—no, stop. It won't help.

His surprise was unmatched as, when he walked into the room where the king and Valion would have their meetings, he found Valion… had not left the place. Instead he was respectfully closing the king's eyes. Arthur tried to avert his eyes from the gruesome stab wound in the king's heart. At least, he supposed, the king had died quickly. His eyes flicked from the king to the prince—similarly dead, though the cause he could not ascertain—and then to Valion.

Valion did not move as he walked slowly closer, he only sighed.

"If you are going to kill me, then get on with it. I was never a very patient man."

"You're not going to run?" Why did you ask him a question, Arthur? You idiot. Arthur mentally scolded himself.

"No," Valion sighed. "In case you didn't gather. I suppose I should deserve it… I did kill one of the people you see before you." He smirked a little. "Let me give you a hint: it wasn't the king."

"Right," Arthur replied smartly. He pointed his sword at Valion's throat, smiling as the armor neatly melted away—then frowning. They were equal forces… Valion must not be trying to defend himself. "What game are you playing?"

"A game that would end in peace, hopefully, though I suppose I've lost that one by now."

"It's a rather inappropriate time for jokes," Arthur hissed. Valion chuckled.

"I'd rather die laughing, if you don't mind." He turned to face Arthur. "So I suppose you just up and left my daughter, huh?"

"What does it matter?"

"It matters that she's going to become my successor, you know. Do you realize what you have done?"

"I haven't done anything that isn't right."

"Yes, I suppose you think that now. In time though, you'll regret that decision, trust me." Valion smiled sadly. "Just kill me."

"Give me answers."

"What? Why did I kill the prince?" Arthur frowned, Valion shrugged. "Oh, well… it might've been the fact that he killed his father and mother or the fact that he—"

"What did you say?"

"I said that he killed his father… and his mother."' Valion tilted his head at Arthur, reminding him of Saivel. "What, what did you think?"

"Stop lying to me. I could kill you any moment."

"I would hardly lie at any time, never mind when someone is pointing a blade at my neck," Valion deadpanned.

"Well then. Why would the prince do that?"

"Because he intended to kill me. I was impressed with his plot, to be honest—even though it was stupid and did end up with his…" Valion frowned. "I can't believe that he would take his own father's life." He paused, then added: "The king. He was like a father to you, wasn't he? I suppose that if you took him as a role model, you might've ended up a good father too."

"Shut up."

"If you want me to be quiet," Valion said, "then you have the tools at your disposal. An Orderstone-coated blade… and my neck."

"Are you asking me to kill you?" Arthur squatted and got on eye level with Valion.

"Only that you do it quickly and preferably not via decapitation. I would appreciate a scene that my daughter would not find too horrifying."

His patience was out. Arthur stood up and lowered his blade so that it pointed at Valion's heart. Valion stared at the blade, seeming disinterested.

"It would only be my honor to die in the same manner as the king. He was a good man."

"An honor? Let me tell you what this is." Arthur smirked and thrust the sword through Valion's heart rather bluntly. The hint of a smile on the Lord's face disappeared as his lifeblood began to drain from him. Squatting down again, his hand still on the hilt, Arthur leaned close and whispered into Valion's ear: "Vengeance."

Valion's eyes flicked towards him. "I only wish it could have gone differently," he whispered, his voice hoarse, before the life drained from his eyes.

Arthur felt… it wasn't really happiness. Satisfaction, he supposed. He stood and pulled the sword out of Valion's chest with a grunt. The blood seemed to evaporate from the blade—presumably because it was filled with Chaos.

As he noticed movement, Arthur looked from the blade to Valion. The armor around him melted into a purple mist which settled around his lifeless form before dashing off to something else, only a few feet away. It landed quickly on the balcony.

Before Arthur could register who it was, they screamed at him and slammed into him forcefully. "How could you?"

He recognized that voice… but the blade had already done its work.

Her eyes were filled with tears and she didn't even seem to register the sword embedded in her stomach. "How could you?" she repeated, more softly. Her voice was choked by tears as she fell to her knees in front of him. The purple mist pooled around her and seemed to be steadily absorbed. "How?"

Arthur was not sure what to do. His own eyes were filling with tears as he, too, dropped to his knees. Some of the purple mist began to surround the blade and with a deafening crack the blade shattered and… disappeared.

It couldn't undo the wound, though, though it tried to—it hung around and almost managed to obscure Arthur's sight from what he had just done. He pulled Saivel towards him and, unsure of what to do, settled for hugging her as tightly as he could. He could feel her breathing, each breath shaking her frame, each weaker than the last.

"How?" she repeated, and he felt her tears falling onto his shoulder and could do nothing but hold her tighter and whisper 'I don't know, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry' mournfully. She was sobbing, loudly, and her tears fell faster and he didn't know what to do.

Slowly and clearly painfully, Saivel reached up an arm to hold him close to her. "I…"

I'm so sorry I don't know I'm so, so sorry I don't deserve to live I don't deserve you

"I… I love you, you stupid bastard," she said, a smile coming onto her face. Her hand weakly smacked him and he cried.

"I don't deserve it," he replied.

"No," Saivel said, "but I don't care."

"I'd rather die with you than live without you," he said.

"Don't."

"Then you're condemning me to a fate worse than death."

"No…" Her hand moved from his back to behind his head and he felt a sudden fogginess.

"What are you doing?"

"I can't… I can't kill you." She held him close to her and he was confused and scared. "But I will not let you live… with all of that pain." Her voice was growing softer and her breathing shallow. He held her, frightened of losing her as the fogginess descended upon him, as he couldn't… remember…

"I love you," he whispered. She smiled. "Don't go," he whispered.

"I'm sorry," she said, and she pushed him gently away from her, but not before sharing one last, small kiss.

*~*~*~*

A man wakes up on a hard stone balcony and finds himself almost completely surrounded by dead people. There is one person who he is fairly certain is alive—another man who… it's almost as if he's on fire, but he's not. His armor is black and imposing and yet the man seems to emanate some sort of warmth and light… like fire.

Suddenly, the man stops and his breath catches as he realize he doesn't know who he is. His mind panics and tries to think, but he can't find a name. Alright, alright. Where are you? The panic only increases as he can't find an answer to that either.

He feels wet upon his cheeks. Why are you crying? He wonders, and for some reason that makes his heart drop and he feels desolate.

"Oh, you're awake," the fire-man says. "I was wondering when you'd come around." He smiles, warmly, but he is too confused.

"Who am I?" he asks first.

"Well, first off… you're a new Chaos Lord. Congratulations. Though if you're asking me for a name I suppose your, uh… gaining of the title was none too—" The fire-man pauses, thinks it over. "Well, that's obvious of course, judging by the fact that everything sort of stone and these people are dead."

Alright, so the fire-man doesn't know either. But his presence is comforting, at least.

"Where am I?"

"Xyla," the fire-man replies. "Formerly Xyla, I suppose. It certainly doesn't seem habitable anymore."

"Who are you?"

"Lord Dragon. The elemental Lord of Fire," he adds quickly. "Are you sure you don't know your name?"

"…I don't," the man replies, confused. "Why am I crying?" he asks. The fire-man—Lord Dragon—is quiet. The man sits up and looks around. His eyes flicker over four dead bodies. First of a black-haired man's, then of two fair-haired ones, and then he sees the black-haired young woman and he starts crying again and he doesn't know why.

"Hey, hey—are you okay?"

"No," he replies. Lord Dragon follows his gaze to the young woman.

"Do you know her?" he asks softly.

"I don't… I…"

Lord Dragon nods and walks over to the young woman. One of her arms is lying over something… some sort of message? He gently moves her arm away so he can read it. It sickens him to see it's written in her own blood.

His name is Arthur and I love him. But don't tell him. I don't want him to feel that pain.

Hastily, Dragon moves the arm back. He wonders what the woman's name was and he wonders what, exactly, was her relationship with… Arthur. He feels a bit guilty for keeping this from Arthur… but the woman loved him, and he supposes that if anyone should be making decision for Arthur, it should be her.

"What was that?" the man asks, curious.

Dragon's mouth is dry. His mind races and, noting the fact that the man is still somewhat clad in Orderstone despite the fact that he is the new Lord of Chaos, comes up with a stupid, but he supposes fitting name.

"I, uh, your… your name is Fuse."

"Fuse," the man says, then nods. "…Alright."

"Let's get you away from this place… we'll come back and give them a proper burial later."

"Thank you," Fuse says. The name feels a little wrong and something seems to be almost coming up in the back of his mind, but he ignores it. He trusts Dragon.

Time passes and Fuse proves to be an adequate Lord of Chaos. They give the four people a burial at sea complete with plenty of flowers. For some reason he felt like giving the girl the most flowers and he felt most hurt when he saw her disappear beneath the waves. But he doesn't know why.

Still, though most of his sleep is dreamless, occasionally he sees her. She doesn't tell him her name, she just tells him to be happy and that he doesn't need to worry about her and that she is… proud of him and that she… she never finishes, though she never say the exact same thing. For some reason he always remembers these dreams, but he doesn't know why.

One dream she appears and she just says that she… and she takes a long time to finish her sentence and she says that she knew a person named Arthur once and she loved him dearly and that… that he is a lot like Arthur and that she is happy for him.

And for some reason he feels like he knows something about Arthur, but he doesn't know why. And for some reason he feels like he was going to say something back, but he doesn't know why.

And for some reason when he is going to die like he knew he was going to eventually, he thinks of her.

And as life slowly slips away from him, he finally knows why.

Chapter One

"Arthur?" Immediately, the young boy looked up from his desk, where he was busily doing some homework. "There's a man for you at the door..." His mother paused and he heard some speech between the two.

"Coming!" he exclaimed, leaping up from his chair with speed and dashing down the hallway. Who could this strange visitor be? Arthur slowed to a halt a little behind his mother, looking up at the unfamiliar man with confusion.

The man's clothing was... a bit odd, he noted, very colorful and bright. The items themselves weren't outlandish, a long coat, relatively formal trousers, and a dress shirt, but the coat was a bright red and seemed almost covered in scales. The trousers were more of a mahogany color, more muted than the coat and much less scaly, while the dress shirt was simply white.

The man himself was tall, standing about a head above Arthur's mother, with dark brown hair and brown eyes, the eyelids creased from smiling and his eyes seeming to catch the light and twinkle mirthfully. His skin was pale but showed traces of the sun and he smiled very genuinely. Arthur wasn't sure why, but he liked the man.

"You must be Arthur Andrews," the man said. His voice was deep, but he was almost whispering. "I've been waiting to meet you. You see," he said, stooping down to be at eye-level with the preteen, "You are a very special boy."

"I'm nothing special," Arthur replied, confused, and adjusted his glasses.

The man laughed, but he didn't seem to be making fun of Arthur. "No, you are. You see, the thing is..." he paused and stood up. "Mrs. Andrews, would you say any odd things have happened around Arthur?"

Arthur's mother frowned and furrowed her brow. "What do you mean by that?"

"Inexplicable things. Things that are... out of the ordinary. Anything like that?" The man gestured with his hands and tilted his head questioningly. Arthur's mother thought it over and began to shake her head no.

"Yeah," Arthur said, now having to look up at the man. "Like when Mom's flowers didn't bloom. She got really worked up about it, but I went out to water them one day and they were all alive."

"Just late bloomers," his mother muttered. The man, however, smiled warmly.

Arthur thought it over some more. "And that one time... I fell out of the window, but somehow I didn't get hurt at all." The man nodded.

"How high?"

"Second floor," Arthur replied before his mother could, feeling a little proud at the man's interest in this.

"If you would... why are you asking this?"

The man unfolded the paper he held in his hands.

"Because, Mrs. Andrews, your son Arthur is a wizard."

There was a long pause.

"Is this some sort of joke?" Arthur's mother began, sounding incredibly suspicious.

"Nothing of the sort, Mrs. Andrews. I am in fact the headmaster of the school Arthur has been invited to, Lord Dragon. Before you ask, I am a second-generation immigrant to America. I assure you, there is nothing fraudulent about this at all. Now. Blue Celadon School of the Magical Arts is a recently established boarding school--"

"Boarding school?"

"It is located, as it would happen, in California--"

"California?!"

The man sighed. "...Blue Celadon School of the Magical Arts is a recently established boarding school, the American cousin of the prestigious Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Mrs. Andrews, if Arthur is not educated then these odd occurrences will only increase in both severity and in number."

Arthur's mother pursed her lips and thought about it. "It sounds okay," Arthur offered helpfully. She sighed.

"How much will it cost?"

"The tuition itself--and the transportation--is free." Arthur's mother let out a sigh. "However, there is the matter of some other purchases. Nothing--nothing much, nothing to worry about, not much more than you'd pay for a private school, I suppose. And financial aid is available."

Arthur's mother looked down at her son, who looked back up at her. "What about my other children? Are they... are they wizards too?"

"No--no, they aren't."

Arthur looked up pleadingly at his mother. He trusted the man, for some reason, because he just... he seemed trustworthy. She sighed.

"I... I suppose..."

"That's great!" Dragon smiled. "Because Arthur, for a wizard, is a..." he paused. "A unique case."

Arthur and his mother frowned. There was a pause.

"But... it's not something you should be concerned about. Do consider allowing your son to attend the school, Mrs. Andrews. We eagerly await your decision." With a courteous nod of his head, Dragon turned and walked away, leaving Arthur and his mother speechless and dumbfounded.

(huehuehuehuehue)

Nothing But

Chapter One

A quick warning to those of you reading this: this is hardly the best story ever told. It did, after all, happen to me, and I'm nothing but... hmm. I'll get back to you on that. This story is nothing but a demented roller coaster ride of emotions and nonsense. In fact, I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't been there and I'm still having a hard time believing it. I thought writing it down might help, so here I am. Writing down this stupid story.

I suppose I'd say all of it began in my first year of high school, but I'll have to offer some context otherwise something won't make sense because I'll forget you, reader, aren't me. So let's see. Starting off, I was 'born' in the 'small, boring town' of 'Mullins, Ohio.' The quotation marks should tell you how untrue that entire sentence was. In fact, my whole life up until that point had been a lie. But hey, I'll get to that later.

Anyway, my life was fairly uneventful. 'Mullins' was a 'small, quiet town' with just a few schools, so I had fairly constant friends. The most notable of these would be Brad Jones, Katherine Maxwell and Dean McKay, though we referred to each other by odd nicknames: Brad was 'Bloons' (from the game, which, you can guess, he was a fan of), I was 'Fuse' (from another game I was a fan of), and Dean was 'Guy' because for some reason I could never remember his name at first and kept on calling him '<article of clothing> guy.' As it (unfortunately) happened, the name stuck. Katherine, meanwhile, was 'Kat' or 'Max' though Max began to be used more often.

Then there was 'Dragon,' who I knew only by the nickname, but mostly because I'd never seen him in person and only over the internet. In fact, I didn't even know if he lived in Mullins. Or in the state. Or in the country. For all I knew he was a 'teen' living in an 'area whose timezone was GMT +8' who 'spoke semi-British English practically perfectly because that was how he was taught.' Wait, that's 'Terra.' Is it Terra? Excuse me, was it Terra. I believe it was.

Dragon was an old friend; Terra I encountered later on. Still, it's a later encounter than what I should be telling you about.

This encounter was on my first day of high school. As it so happened, Bloons, Guy, and I had almost the exact same schedule save for the language classes we were taking (Guy Spanish, Bloons nothing yet, me French). Max was taking French, I believed, but I wasn't sure exactly where she was...

We all arrived fairly early on the first day, and apparently two girls had had the same idea. One of them was Max, who I hadn't been able to contact last night. She had short, slightly wavy dark brown hair reaching about to her chin and dark brown eyes framed by round, black-rimmed glasses. A blue rolling backpack rested on her leg. Her clothing was a simple white-and-blue plaid shirt and faded shorts reaching about to her knees. A light blue jacket was tied around her waist and a simple white, iridescent globe hung from a black string around her neck--it seemed too big to be a pearl and glowed faintly--or at least I swore it did.

Beside her was a girl who appeared to be Asian. Her thick black hair was cut into a short A-line bob and her dark brown eyes (which looked almost black) were surrounded by light purple glasses. Something about her face seemed to remind me of a fox. She wore a thin, reddish Abercrombie hoodie with the hood up, though it was left unzipped and showed the simple white shirt she wore, as well as the dark blue skinny jeans and Ugg boots. The unfamiliar girl had her hands tightly gripping onto the straps of her black backpack and appeared to be looking around nervously, at least until her eyes rested on me.

She tapped Max lightly on the shoulder. Max looked up and also saw me. I was feeling slightly uncomfortable, while Bloons and Guy seemed oblivious to what was going on.

"Hey, Fuse!" Max called out, grabbing onto the handle of her rolling backpack and walking swiftly over to me. The Asian girl followed closely behind her, one of her hands dropping down beside her waist. At this, Bloons and Guy looked up and then at me, confused.

"Uh, hi?" My greeting was more of a question--I wasn't entirely sure what was going on. "I was going to tell you we were going to come early to check out the school... we're not that early, we're allowed to be here, teachers are here, y'know... what's your schedule, by the way?"

"Well, first off--" Max turned to the Asian girl. "This is Esther. I call her Elder. She's new here, moved from California. Elder, this is Arthur. Fuse."

Elder looked at me thoughtfully. "When's your birthday?" she asked.

"...June seventeenth, 1998. Why?"

She smiled a little--more of a smirk, really, accompanied by a small chuckle. Elder walked closer to me. She was a bit taller than me, I noticed. She said, "Well then, you can also call me Unni if you want to show some respect to your elders, dong-saeng."

"...What?" Guy asked, finally ending his silence.

"And who're you?" Elder turned to Guy, tilting her head curiously.

"Dean McKay. Guy." A bit hesitantly, he held out his hand to shake. "So should I call you Unni too then?" he muttered under his breath as Elder took the proffered hand.

"Heh! Everyone's younger than me!" Elder exclaimed. "And who're you, then?"

Bloons' eyes flickered up at her. "Brad Jones, Bloons. And I was born a year before Fuse and Guy."

Elder seemed ready to say something before Max shot her a warning look. Noticing it, I wondered why--wouldn't she just say something about someone being older than her and call him whatever the heck. Unni? Was that gender-neutral? Did it depend on gender? Heck, I didn't know. It sounded foreign and I didn't understand it and there was little chance I would pronounce it correctly.

"If you were wondering, 'Unni' means older sister. But," she added, "I won't tell you the word for older brother and as such I will refer to none of you as that." I could see her lips moving, saying something quickly under her breath. Bloons rolled his eyes. "In any case, it was nice meeting you..." She paused and looked at me, her eyes piercing.

She sniffed her nose and I could've sworn her... hood twitched? before I noticed that other students were now walking into the school courtyard. Once we'd looked to the students coming in, we turned back, and Elder was gone.

Max turned to look after her. "Yeah, Elder's like that," she said absentmindedly. She turned quickly back to us.

"So when's her birthday?" Guy asked.

"June first, 1998," Max replied quickly--almost like she'd practiced it.

"And how did you meet her? You said she came from California?..." Bloons didn't seem very interested, but that was how he worked.

"Well, she's... family and friends, they were moving and they told us. She's pretty cool, I guess--she might've seemed kinda weird but once you get past that she's not too different from me." Elder seemed very different than Max--and this, too, sounded practiced. Confusing and suspicious. "Anyway, the bell's gonna ring soon, so let's see whether we can find our first class."

"Oh, right! What's your schedule?" I leaned over as she took it quickly out of her backpack and showed it to me. Pretty much an exact match. "Great! Okay then, let's get going."

As it so happened, Elder shared the same first class. And the second one. And the third one. And the fourth one. And the... do I need to repeat myself any more? The fact was she was in as many of my classes as the rest of my friends, and it definitely didn't seem right. I suspected a lot of things.

But not, of course, what happened when after a few days and plenty of friendship building, I asked her outright.

i just realized this is sorta like my own version of creature fear, huh

feel free to guess what everybody is, it's not the same as max (for mostly everyone... >.> <.< >.> <.< (nah jk i haven't actually totally decided on everyone yet, most people though))
